For the April 2012 Round Square Conference
When we considered the theme of the conference, “no existence without coexistence” it allowed us a great deal of freedom for interpretation. Some students looked at the relationship between man and man in Africa, considering tribal conflicts and ethnic and cultural divisions.
We chose to consider how Africa is blessed with abundant wildlife, the only continent still holding on to this rich natural heritage, yet this is threatened now.
The competition for resources, most especially land, between man and wildlife in Kenya is what inspired us toward our design for this conference logo.
You will notice that both the figures, the man and the lion, face in the same direction. This was our way of suggesting that the future lies in harmonious coexistence, rather than a relentless drive by man to dominate. We could learn a great deal from the Maasai tribesmen who live in harmony with their environment.
