The William Holden Wildlife Foundation Education Centre is dedicated to preserving vanishing and endangered species. Nestled on the slopes of Mt Kenya, the centre offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience conservation activities.
The centre was founded in memory of the conservation vision of Oscar-winning American actor William Holden, known for his acting career which spanned 40 years and nearly 80 films. However the role in which Holden took most pride was as a conservationist and co-founder of the Mount Kenya Game Ranch. His dedicated efforts to preserve wildlife instilled in everyone he met a reverence for nature's creatures.
In his memory, actress Stefanie Powers (of TV’s ‘Hart to Hart’ fame) founded the William Holden Wildlife Foundation (WHWF) to carry on Holden’s important efforts and to meet the ever-increasing need for conservation education in Africa.
The foundation's education programme currently serves over 10,000 students a year. Students who visit the centre engage in practical environmental conservation projects, as well as touring the Mount Kenya Game Ranch and Animal Orphanage, established to protect endangered species, including the rare mountain bongo and the ‘white’ zebra. |
