Adventure Day

To give you a real sense of the adventure that can be part of life in Africa, we have planned to take you away from the modern city environment of Nairobi for one day and night so that you can experience first-hand the excitement of the African bush.  For our Adventure Day programme you will be divided into several groups: smaller groups (with one student delegate from each school) where one group will face the challenge of rafting the white waters of the Tana River whilst another group heads north to the slopes of Mt Kenya to spend time on wildlife projects at a conservation centre.  Larger groups will experience the big game of Africa on game drives and walking safaris.  There might even be those amongst you who take up the challenge of a night line walk through the darkness of the African bush.  Whichever group you are in, be prepared to take up the challenges of an African adventure!

William Holden Centre
Nanyuki, Kenya
William Holden

The William Holden Wildlife Foundation Education Centre is dedicated to preserving vanishing and endangered species.  Nestled on the slopes of Mt Kenya, the centre offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience conservation activities.

The centre was founded in memory of the conservation vision of Oscar-winning American actor William Holden, known for his acting career which spanned 40 years and nearly 80 films.  However the role in which Holden took most pride was as a conservationist and co-founder of the Mount Kenya Game Ranch.  His dedicated efforts to preserve wildlife instilled in everyone he met a reverence for nature's creatures.

In his memory, actress Stefanie Powers (of TV’s ‘Hart to Hart’ fame) founded the William Holden Wildlife Foundation (WHWF) to carry on Holden’s important efforts and to meet the ever-increasing need for conservation education in Africa.

The foundation's education programme currently serves over 10,000 students a year.  Students who visit the centre engage in practical environmental conservation projects, as well as touring the Mount Kenya Game Ranch and Animal Orphanage, established to protect endangered species, including the rare mountain bongo and the ‘white’ zebra.

Savage Wilderness Camp
Sagana, Kenya
Savage

Established in 1990 as a family operation, Savage Wilderness Safaris pioneered white-water rafting in Kenya.  Their campsite in Sagana is on the shores of the Tana River, about an hour and a half drive from Nairobi on the Thika Road.

On site accommodation allows students to experience some of the several adventure activities available during their stay, including:-

  • White-water rafting
  • Kayaking
  • Mountaineering
  • Rock climbing
  • Trekking

Team building activities and those designed to test ‘going beyond your comfort zone’ are a key part of the Savage Wilderness Camp experience.

The instructors at the camp are all fully qualified trainers and security at the site is excellent. Each year Savage Wilderness hosts many school groups and they are experienced in dealing with student adventure activities.
